Resolution is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It is usually quoted as width x height, with the units in pixels. In the same screen size, the higher the resolution is, the more fine and smooth the image will be. Following are some common screen resolutions:

VGA: Video Graphics Array

It refers to 640 x 480 resolution. Originally, VGA is not the specification of resolution, but a display standard of IBM computer. Because the highest resolution that official supports is 640 x 480, it becomes another name of VGA. Its important role lies in it is the reference resolution that all graphics compatible with. The picture displays before Windows loading the drives for the graphic card (after BIOS) is just the VGA resolution.

SVGA: Super Video Graphics Array

It refers to 800x 600 resolution, a standard put forward by VESA for IBM compatible PC. SVGA belongs to the substitute of VGA.

XGA: Extended Graphics Array

It refers to 1024x 768 resolution. This is a kind of LCD screen widely used by laptop nowadays. About 80% of laptops in market adopts XGA, which supports 1024 x 768 resolution. The screen size ranges from 10.4inch, 12.1inch, 13.3inch to 14.1 inch, 15.1inch.

SXGA+: Super Extended Graphics Array

It refers to 1400 x 1050 resolution. As an extension of SXGA, SXGA+ is a kind of screen designed specially for laptops. Since the horizontal and vertical dot pitch of laptop LCD screen differs from that of common desktop LCD screen, the display accuracy is much higher than common 17inch desktop.

UXGA: Ultra Extended Graphics Array

It refers to 1600 x 1200 resolution.UXGA is also called UGA, its resolution is exactly 4 times of VGA. The biggest downside of this display is its high cost. At present, this kind of resolution is found application in 20inch LCD devices.

QXGA: Quantum Extended Graphics Array

It refers to 2048 x 1536 resolution. Its resolution is right 4 times of XGA, and is also the limit of most 4:3 screen. Currently, Apple has released new iPad, iPad4 and New Macbook Pro, and these products has applied this technology in its retina screen. This screen technology makes the whole screen display effect reach a very high smooth degree.

WVGA: Wide Video Graphics Array

WVGA means wide version VGA and has a resolution of 800 x 480. If the smarphone adopts this resolution, the human eyes will look like a piece of paper. In normal distance, user can not distinguish the single pixel, so this resolution can bring a better user experience.

WXGA: Wide Extended Graphics Array

WXGA means wide version XGA and has a resolution of 1280 x 800. WXGA adopts 16:10 aspect ratio to expand the screen size. Because of its 800 horizontal pixels, so this type of screen can be found application in 15-inch and 12.1-inch notebook.

WXGA+: Wide Extended Graphics Array Plus

It is an extension of WXGA and has a resolution of 1440 x 900. Its biggest display resolution is 1280 x 854. Its aspect ratio is 15:10 rather than 16:10, so only a small part of notebook with 15.2 inch adopts this technology.

WUXGA: Wide Ultra Video Graphics Array

It refers to 1920 x 1200 resolution. As the 4:3 aspect ratio in UXGA, WUXGA is very rare to be found. Its display resolution can reach up to 1920 x 1200. But rare notebook manufactures adopts this screen due to its high price.

WQXGA: Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array

It is an extension of QXGA with resolution of 2560 x 1600. This type of resolution is found in Nexus 10.

qHD: Quarter High Definition

It refers to 960 x 540 resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio. It is just a quarter of full HD 1920 x 1080.

It refers to 4096 x 2160 resolution. According to the range of application, 4K resolution has various of variants, for example, 4096 x 3112 in Full Aperture 4K, 3656 x 2664 in Academy 4K, and 3840 x 2160 in UHDTV, which all belongs to 4K resolution. Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is the first 4K resolution smartphone.

Refers to the concentration of pixels on a particular display, measured in pixels per inch (PPI). Pixel density is calculated by dividing the diagonal pixel resolution of a display by its diagonal size.

For human eyes, 300PPI is enough for us to see comfortably. Too high pixel density is prone to cause eyestrain and increase the burden of battery.
